Congratulations to our junior ATSIAP team

Our Heatley SS Junior ATSIAP team excelled in the recent competition.

Our team of Sophie, Teeshar, Sahara and Shantaya placed first  in problem solving, second in art, third in poetry , third in commercials and were judged Overall Team Winner. We are very proud of their commitment over the last couple of months of preparation and their performances last week.

Junior ATSIAP (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aspirations Program) provides initiatives for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to improve both socially and emotionally in self-confidence, self-identity and helps to develop a strong sense of motivation to achieve life goals. Since its inception in 1987, this program has been one of the recognised factors in supporting the retention rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. It has also helped strengthen links for the student both at school and in the community. Students once competed at ATSIAP all around Queensland but now it is only active in the North Queensland Region mainly due to the Region’s Community Education Counsellor, Mrs Joan McKay.
