People, Culture & Country Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Project (Wearable Arts)
Year 6 students work together with our CEC Miss Demi, Arts teacher Mrs Rush, Assistant Teacher Miss Gibbs, volunteer parents and community members to create wearable art pieces during terms 2 & 3 on one afternoon each week.
An
exhibition late in the year includes work from many local primary and secondary schools and is open to the public. Links to the catalogue of all artworks can be found on the Heatley Secondary College website. More information on this year's works including a link to the catalogue are on the Heatley Secondary College website.
In 2021 our students also participated in the Northern Festival of Arts (NAFA) event POSE, a live showing of wearable arts. Students modelled wearable art pieces from the 2019 and 2020 People, Culture & Country projects.
Heatley SS has actively participated in this program since 2019 which was recognised as the state winner at the 2020 Queensland Department of Education Showcase Awards for Excellence in schools.
Heatley Secondary College submitted the 2020 Showcase nomination on behalf of the participating schools: Heatley State School, Kirwan State High School, Mornington Island State School, Northern Beaches State High School, Spinifex State College—Mount Isa—Junior Campus, Thuringowa State High School, William Ross State High School, Wulguru State School, Townsville State High School and Pimlico State High School.
