We acknowledge the Wulgurukaba people as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the school is built. Wulgurukaba means "canoe people". The Wulgurukaba call these lands "Gurrumbilbarra".
Heatley SS is a co-educational primary school, located approximately 11 kilometres west of the CBD of Townsville in North Queensland, Australia. It was built in 1971 in the suburb of Heatley which was named after a businessman and former Townsville Mayor, William John Heatley.
Currently we have an enrolment of around 430 students from Prep to Year 6. We are proud of our diverse school community. There are children and staff from a wide array of cultural backgrounds including those who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, European, Asian or from the South Pacific.
Some of our distinctive features include: whole class computer lab and 2 mobile labs; Global Tropics (online, extension activities provided by Qld Virtual STEM Academy), participation in People, Culture & Country (a wearable arts project), an excellent instrumental and whole of year classroom music program and choir, qualified teacher librarian, annual participation in the North Queensland Junior Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Aspirations Program (Junior ATSIAP), a playgroup that operates every Tuesday from 9-11am in the Heatley Hub and a 'Prep4Prep' transition into school program that runs weekly for 4 weeks during term 4 each year.
Students with disabilities participate in our classes with varying levels of adjustment. An Early Childhood Development Program (ECDP) also operates in our school for pre-school aged children with identified learning and developmental differences.
Heatley State School celebrated 50 years of education in 2021 and we held our anniversary celebrations in conjunction with our annual NAIDOC Week at the end of Term 2 that same year.
Our school became enrolment-managed in 2013, so only families who live in our catchment area can be automatically enrolled. Those who live outside the catchment area are still most welcome to make enquiries to enrol as some year levels will have vacancies. Please call us on 4759 5333 with your enrolment enquiries. Our office opens from 8:15am 3:45pm, but we have a 24 hour answering machine.
To make this complex and diverse school as successful as it is, takes a lot of good faith and many parents and family members give their time willingly to help in the tuckshop and through the Heatley SS P&C Association. We are always on the lookout for more volunteers. We can assist you to get your Blue Card which is free for volunteers.
If parents/visitors would like to come on campus, we ask that you enter the school via Gate 4 and go straight to the office where we can help you with your enquiry. Gate opening and closing times are regularly publicised through our Facebook page and directly to parents via SMS.
The 'Our Staff' link on the left hand side of this page will help you find who you might like to talk to. Feel free to call our office to make an appointment, which is our preferred way of working to give you quality time.
